Breakfast Seminar: The Psychology of Fraud - Understanding, Identifying & Preventing

Fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated, affecting businesses across all sectors. To understand how and why fraudsters operate, it's crucial to dive into the psychology of fraud, recognize early warning signs, and implement effective prevention strategies.

The Benelux Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Wise Wings and Grant Thornton, will hold an insightful breakfast seminar that goes beyond the surface to explore the behavioral patterns and motivations of fraudsters. MayCham China in Shanghai as the co-organizer, cordially invites you to attend. Through real-world case studies and expert insights, you will learn practical strategies to build a resilient and fraud-aware business environment.

Why Do People Commit Fraud?

Fraud is not always rooted in financial desperation, often, it's driven by psychological traits and environmental pressures. According to the Fraud Triangle developed by Donald Cressey, three critical factors must exist for fraud to take place: Pressure, Opportunity, and Rationalization. Behavioral insights also point to elements of narcissism, antisocial tendencies, and even bounded ethicality, where individuals believe their actions are justified, despite being unethical.

Psy. Ruddy Swinnen, a business psychologist and founder of Wise Wings, will discuss the influence of nature vs. nurture in the development of fraudulent behavior. Drawing on his extensive research, Swinnen will shed light on how personality traits such as Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy—often referred to as the 'Dark Triad'—play a role in manipulative and deceitful practices.

Dr. Tim Klatte, Head of Forensic Advisory Services at Grant Thornton China, will further explore how corporate culture and leadership approaches can either mitigate or exacerbate risks of fraud. His extensive experience in fraud investigations and compliance will bring practical tools for recognizing early red flags and fortifying internal controls.

Why Attend?

During this seminar, you will gain insights into the psychological triggers and motivations that push individuals toward fraud. Our experts will guide you in recognizing early warning signs before it's too late, enabling you to proactively address vulnerabilities within your organization. Real-world case studies and behavioral analysis will help you identify red flags that often precede fraudulent activities.

The seminar also provides practical tools to fortify your internal controls, making it harder for fraudsters to operate undetected. You will explore risk management strategies that not only detect fraud but also prevent it, ensuring compliance with best practices. Effective leadership approaches will also be covered, highlighting how strong ethical cultures can reduce fraud risks and enhance organizational resilience.
