The year 2020 has not been easy for the majority of people and businesses around the world, especially for entrepreneurs, who have had to face a pandemic on top of the trials and tribulations of running and scaling their businesses, not to forget fundraising.


In our second Dragon's Den event, we invite you to come along for the ride and hear what it takes to persevere and get out of your comfort zone. Our three speakers (founders) are all currently fundraising. The event format thrusts our speakers to pitch their ventures to the audience as if they were potential investors.

    Oscar Ramos is a "full-stack innovator" with expertise ranging from hard technology and product design to corporate strategy and venture capital.

    After getting his Master of Engineering in Telecommunications, he started off his career in Ericsson as an R&D engineer and later joined Telefonica Research Center working on deep tech topics such as mobile network protocols, cybersecurity, RF and media technology. He then transitioned to the world of HealthTech and startups after working on a user-centric design mode and discovering Business Model Innovation in his previous position. His passion for innovation propelled him to move to China in early 2008 and drop out of his Biomedical Ph.D. program to start his first venture. Since then he has been involved in various areas of innovation as an entrepreneur, investor and advisor to startups and multinationals.

    Shirley Rong Wang has overall 25 years of global managerial experience, including recent 5 years of Edtech startup experience. Shirley is a successful practitioner of second language acquisition pedagogy in the K12 field, has founded a well-known teacher-led online tutoring platform in China (B2B version of VIPKID). Prior to that, Shirley held the position of Vice President, Customer Experience & Operations in a global education group, overseeing over 100,000 active students in 60 learning centers across 20 cities in China. Shirley is the member representative of Sino-America Education Research Association (S-AERA), coach of US Scouts in China, and also owns the copyright of Second Language Input and Output System.

    Prior to education entrepreneurship, Shirley used to work in strategic consulting, investment, M&A for close to 10 years in global 500 corporates, leading their South-east Asian and Australian markets, responsible for $50M+ P&L.

    Kari Hakanen is currently General Manager of Asian Risks Management Services in Shanghai where he established the office and is leading its expansion.

    He started his career in the public sector of his native Finland with assignments in Shanghai and Tokyo. Upon returning to Shanghai he transitioned into the insurance sector where he worked with companies such as Jardine Lloyd Thompson until it was acquired by MMC. He then joined Asian Risks Managements Services to set-up and open their Shanghai office.

    He lives in Shanghai with his wife and daughter. Kari holds a MA in Asian Studies from University of Turku and is also Acting Chair of British Chamber Shanghai’s Financial Services Committee.
